Molokini is also home to an estimated 100 species of algae and 38 hard coral species. One of the more common species of shark at Molokini Crater is the whitetip reef shark. This shark gets its name from the white tip on its dorsal fin, and they average 4.5 ft in length. The whitetip shark is docile during the day and can be found cruising along the bottom of the reef.
Location
Fun crew that made it easy for everyone from 5 to 75. Only thing missing was information from the crew on the history and stories about Maui and the islands surrounding it. All boats are required to pick up one of the moorings provided by the state. The mooring floats are 3 meters beneath the surface, so someone must dive down to retrieve the pennant. Brown Boobies also roost at Molokini, along with large Frigate birds, whose wingspan can reach 7 feet across. The Frigate birds with superior flying skills harass other seabirds until they drop their food, which the Frigate bird recovers in mid-air.

Our Maui Snorkeling Tours, Scenic and Whale Watching Adventures:
Maalaea Harbor is the most convenient and it’s not far from Molokini. A favorite for scuba divers that love the many hanging shelves around 50 feet down. Beneath the main shelf is another 80 feet of water before reaching the bottom. Under the ledges, red sponges and tube coral can be seen only with powerful lights.
Molokini Wild Side Adventure
These graceful creatures can often be seen at Coral Gardens, a frequent stop on our afternoon snorkel tour. The Hawaiian turtle is beloved by visitors and residents alike. Coral Gardens is on the West Side of Maui and best reached by boat, explore one of the most unique and protected bays in Hawaii. Home to a host of tropical fish, Octopus, Eels, and the Hawaiian green sea turtles, Coral Gardens does not disappoint. Venture through calm waters with your family and friends, enjoying all the beauty of the Pacific.
Of course, the brilliant weather we were blessed with helped. We visited in mid-November – the sun shone and the water was calm and silky warm. And it had been almost two years since we’d last gone snorkeling. Years ago, when we first went scuba diving at Molokini, the coral gardens were healthy and blooming. And the wide variety of colorful tropical fish were abundant – we remember galaxies of fish! The whale season in Maui is December to April – that’s when up to 12,000 humpbacks migrate to the island’s warm shallow waters to breed, give birth and nurse their young.
Turtle Town is known for its high population of Hawaiian green sea turtles. The area is protected from the high trade winds giving way to easy and relaxing snorkeling. This adventurous snorkel tour explores west side waters based on our captain’s expertise at determining the best location for the day. Enjoy delicious lunch grilled on board and unobstructed views on this small group tour, while discovering the hidden Maui gems that larger boats may not be able to access. Molokini Crater houses a reef with up to 150 feet of visibility (on the backside and outside of the crescent). This makes Molokini a highly sought-after location for avid scuba divers.
The islet’s concave shape protects divers from waves and strong currents. You will be fascinated by 250 diverse species in a tropical sanctuary that is comfortable for swimmers. Molokini also yields ample opportunity to capture some great underwater photos. O‘ahu is the lively center and most visited of all Hawaiian Islands. As a paradise for active travelers it is rich in experiences that include nature, culinary discoveries, historic landmarks, shopping, nightlife and festivals. There are a few main areas on Maui from where boats depart.
This makes Molokini a highly sought-after location for avid divers. Their five-hour tour includes a little more excitement. Not only do you snorkel in Molokini Crater but you are also able to head to the back wall of the crater (weather permitting), which is an adventure. And you’ll spend some time at Turtle Town as well before having lunch and heading back to Kihei. But, as with all the Hawaiian islands, early morning is the best time for snorkeling. By mid-morning, the trade winds usually start to pick up, the water gets choppier and visibility isn’t as good.
The captains will provide comprehensive site orientation and snorkel lessons right onboard for those with little or no prior experience. It’s one of the few volcano islets globally and is famously known for its diverse underwater ecosystem. Take advantage of all opportunities to snorkel at Molokini when visiting Maui. It has the deepest spot along the backside of Molokini at around 250 feet.
